David Wolton stool & chair

"As a designer, David Wolton inclines towards engineering and the performance-per-pound principle - an approach that eschews self-conscious ornament or display of the craftsman's art: Buckmister Fuller rather than John Makepeace. A hop merchant and publisher, he belongs to the tradion of the inspired english amateur; for the past twenty years he has designed and made a series of original softwood chairs and stools. They are intriguing for their combination of slender elegance and a deliberately orange-box quality. Their apparent fragility belies remarkable strength. ..... The stool, one of a series, is similiarly constructed. Our subliminal recognition is promptly by the fact that it closely resembles the stools used by Ancient Egyptians, familiar from tomb reliefs and paintings."/1
